Every so often, a joke will come up about women and their periods. There’s the popular one, about how if the world was ruled by women, we’d stop every 28 days to have war. But jokes about women's hygiene are not funny. Period.

We might so often poke humor about women and their menstrual cycle, but what we don’t recognize is the thousands of young girls in Kenya who are going through life without having the means and chance to walk with a head held high, regardless of the day. Often, those of us in better circumstances might think that every woman has had the use of a sanitary pad or tampon. Truth is, some might not even have heard about it.
This is where charities such as The Iddi Achieng Trust come in. Founded by musician, actress and social worker, IDDI ACHIENG, the trust secured 8,068 panties from MARIDADI . The cause has been activated by Grace Makosewe of Nairobi VIP.com and supported by organizations such as Capital FM.
Why panties you ask? Because most times, these poor girls don’t have any panties that can be worn to hold the pads in place.
The Iddi Achieng Trust (TIAT) is a community focused organization whose goal since inception in 2008 is working together with marginalized communities to realize positive developmental change .Our current programs whose focus is the girl child under the 'Ka Dana Education Initiative' seeks to ensure steady class attendance and retention through provision of sanitary towels and panties to rural primary school girls as an entry point to discuss Reproductive Health Education.
The goal is to distribute the pads and panties to 20 targeted primary schools with a total of 2,017@4per girl in Alego South, Karemo Division, Bar Ongong'o Zone, Siaya County.
And now, the Great Panties Blast Concert is happening in Nairobi. The concert purposes to raise sanitary protection to match these panties through the unifying factor of music. Performing alongside Iddi Achieng’ will be Makadem, Asali, Judith Bwire, and Kevo among others, MC’eed by Phelix Odiwuor (Jalang’o) and Jacquey Nyaminde (Wilbroda)
The event will also be graced by GoK representatives, Invited Development Partners, Friends of TIAT, opinion shapers and fans and will also be the main launch of TIAT.
Don’t be left out! All it costs is a panty or a packet of pads. A good chance for guys to explain why they have panties in their pockets or cars, eh?
To support: Tweet using the #PadBank hashtag, and listen to the buzz around the event. And don't forget to show up for the concert!
